There are hundreds of things in the world that are beyond our control. As dog lovers, one of the things the break our hearts is the existence of dog meat farms. Unfortunately, there is just so much we can do about them. Disgusting as it may be, this is part of the culture of many of our east Asian friends.
However, it doesn’t mean that we cannot voice our opinions on the matter. Even if we are just part of the common folk, our voices can go a long way. But if we are in a position of authority, we can truly create change, just like South Korean President Moon Jae-In.
During his campaign, President Moon was very vocal about the betterment of animal rights in South Korea. Alongside China, South Korea is under fire because of the existence of dog meat trades within the countries. This is something that President Moon wants to abolish.
However, since it is part of their culture, he cannot make any drastic changes regarding the matter. So, to signify his intent to save dogs from meat farms, he adopted Tory, a shelter pup rescued by the Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) a couple of years ago.
This does not only signify his intentions, but it’s an attempt to inspire his fellow South Koreans to care for shelter dogs. CARE delivered Tory to the Blue House – the official residence of South Korea’s elected president. Tory will be sharing the presidential home with a cat named Jjing-jjing and a dog named Maru.
This adoption not only spreads awareness about shelter dogs in South Korea, but President Moon wanted to show his fellow Koreans that black dogs do not bring bad luck as people in the region believed. They are still far from their goal of abolishing the dog meat trade in the country, but this is a sign that they are heading in the right direction.
