More often than not, we’ve heard of stories about mail carriers being chased by dogs while they are on their route. For many years, whenever we hear the words “dog” and “mailman,” we immediately think “chaos.” This is because there is a common misconception that dogs and mail carriers are mortal enemies.
Are dogs and mail carriers really mortal enemies?
Now, before you actually get all worked up and say that you’ve seen dogs chase mail carriers before, let me just clarify one thing. Yes, there is some truth to this, because dogs usually keep their houses safe from strangers, including mail carriers who are just there to drop off some, well, mail.
But to say that dogs and mail carriers are mortal enemies might be taking things a little too far. Countless stories have proven that dogs and mail carriers can get along. All they need to do is be well-acquainted with each other.
Tricks of the trade
Since it is natural for dogs to be protective of their respective homes, it is usually up to the mail carriers to establish a connection with each dog on their route. Some take their time to slowly earn every dog’s trust, while others try to get on the dogs’ good side by giving them things.
The most common gift mail carriers give to dogs are treats. In Bethesda, Maryland, a mail carrier of 32 years named Katherine is loved by the dogs on her route simply because she always gives them treats along the way.
Among the dogs along Katherine’s route is a German Shorthaired Pointer named Lux, who always fails to contain its excitement upon seeing its favorite mail carrier. In a video posted on TikTok and shared by various accounts on Instagram, Lux can be seen wagging its tail in anticipation of its favorite mail carrier, Katherine.
