Cocker Spaniel Is First Dog To Be Trained To Find Missing Pets

Cocker Spaniel Is First Dog To Be Trained To Find Missing Pets

Sara Kruid July 20, 2020

Finding a missing pet can be very hard, not to mention very time-consuming. Without a single clue as to where they may have gone, it is near impossible for us to know where to look for our missing pets.

Colin Butcher has worked as a detective for years. As a detective, he has seen the success of dogs when it comes to sniffing out drugs and bombs. Because of this, Colin thought that maybe dogs could be trained to locate missing pets as well.

Colin’s plan came into fruition when he adopted Molly, an 8-month-old Cocker Spaniel. Molly was advertised in a pet listing, and as Colin found out, Molly had been with three different families in just two years! Colin knew that he had to take Molly in.

After adopting Molly, Colin made exploratory tests on her to see if she would be suitable to find cats. And not surprisingly, Molly passed. One of the things that made her suitable was the fact that she did not, in any way, try to chase the cats, and what’s more, she was more than happy to learn and train.

Molly spent eight months training to sniff out cats at The Medical Detection Dogs Charity. Ever since her specialized training, Molly has already helped locate 11 missing cats!

Though people have said that training a dog to find cats will not work due to the stereotype that dogs and cats don’t get along, seeing Molly’s success has been very rewarding for Colin. Molly loves sniffing out cats; to her, it is just a game.

And while Molly is specialized in finding cats, dogs can also be used to find other missing pets such as dogs and other pets as well. Goes to show that even older dogs can be taught new tricks!
