Texas authorities raided the home of a breeder when they received a report that there were numerous dogs living in horrid and unsanitary conditions there. They were able to rescue more than 40 dogs – many of them were sick and had infections.
One of the dogs that had it worse is a senior Maltese named Star. Rescuers estimate her age to be between 10-12 years old.
Most of the dogs were taken by Joyrides Rescue. They are an all-volunteer rescue group that puts homeless dogs in foster homes. When they got Star, the first thing they did was to bring her to a vet.
Because of neglect, the dog’s fur was severely matted. They had to shave off her fur before checking on her health. Even her eyes were shut close due to a thick wad of hair. When they were finally able to get it all off, the medical team was shocked to discover that the dog had no eyes.
All they found was an empty socket that was very infected. They couldn’t think of any possible reason why her eyes seemingly got dissolved. The breeder’s failure to give the dog medical treatment resulted in her condition.
As it was too late to do anything, the vets removed the infection from her eye sockets and sewed it shut. Then after getting cleaned up, she was given to one of the volunteer rescuers who offered to foster her.
A new life
Even after going through years of neglect and pain, Star remarkably adapted well to her new life. Despite being blind, she has shown that she can be independent. The little dog’s character also showed a lot of changes. She has become happier and more responsive to human interaction.
Star has flourished and is now ready for a forever family. Her foster parents are now actively looking for a home that would give the senior dog the love and care that was denied to her for a long time.
